Healthy Intimate Relationships

College is a time when many young adults find themselves in their first serious relationships. It can be an exciting time—especially if the relationship is fulfilling, adds to our self-worth, and helps us to grow as individuals. Healthy relationships, those that provide us with positive feelings, are an important part of the human experience. However, occasionally, relationships can leave you with feelings that just aren’t quite right and might be considered "unhealthy."

The Fall 2005 edition of the Mental Health Matters Newsletter developed by IUPUI Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides information to help you determine if you are in an unhealthy relationship. Topics include: characteristics of a healthy relationship, warning signs of relationship violence, how to help someone you think may be the target of relationship violence, and many resources on campus and in the community.

If you still have questions about the health of your relationship, Planned Parenthood has developed a list of questions you can ask yourself to help determine if you are in an unhealthy relationship.
